Patagonia, Chile
In the Southernmost part of Chile (the austral zone), the geography and nature emerge from the most extreme and spectacular forms that it is possible to imagine, adorned with breathtaking landscapes: a pristine concert of native forests, pampas, islands, fjords, channels, fast flowing rivers, lakes and lagoons, hotsprings, majestic millenary icefields and snowdrifts. It is a zone of extinguished cultures, old cattle ranches and important explorers. This is the Chilean Patagonia that embraces Palena Province, Los Lagos Region and Magallanes Region. This is a zone where there is no pollution and the waters of its numerous rivers, lakes, lagoons and brooks have a high level of pureness. Here are the last continental icefields, silent witnesses of the last glaciations, almost 20 thousand years old. This austral zone of magic geography, extreme nature of luxurious Magallanean forests, lakes with waters that reflect the awesome Torres del Paine and lakes with ice floes and impressive glaciers of up to 75 meters of height, which ice blocks fall on the waters forming spectacular waves of more than 10 m height.43% of the Chilean Patagonian surface is formed by wild protected areas, in virtue of the existence of a wide biological diversity not touched by man, with native species of flora and fauna of special scientific or recreational interest and relevant natural geological places from the scenic, cultural or scientific point of view: San Rafael Lagoon National Park, preferred place chosen by transatlantics for its scenic beauty and other parks of similar characteristics as Bernardo O’Higgins, Alberto De Agostini, Cabo de Hornos, Francisco Coloane Marine Park, located in Carlos III island, the indicated place to watch whales and the Torres del Paine National Park, one of the most visited by foreign tourist, and declared world Biosphere Reserve.Tourists will discover and be enchanted with the awesome and pristine landscape when travelling through the Camino Austral (Aysen Region) or sailing from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales (Magallanes Region) through the Patagonian channels among islands and peninsulas, crossing fjords and glaciers. This is an unforgettable adventure!.
San Rafael Lagoon
Its natural attributes – which are characterized by a wide array of attractions located in the area of the austral channels, isles, fjords, thermal springs and snowdrifts – determine that its tourist possibilities are related to adventure tourism, in practically all its disciplines and even navigation activities, with cruisers and catamarans visits, which are more and more frequent. In its frozen waters, in the middle of an amazingly beautiful landscape of silent harmony and sculptural glaciers, a wide variety of birds and aquatic animals can be spotted, most of the time when they are resting on the icebergs that float on its greenish waters.
San Rafael Glacier, is one of the highest of the Northern Patagonian Icefields, and it surprises tourists with uproars produced by huge pieces of ice that fall from the enormous ice mass to the lagoon.
The lagoon can be reached by the Tempanos River, from the Elefante Channel. You can sail along it until you get to the ice wall of San Rafael Snowdrift.
Sailing to the south of Chacabuco Port, the main attractions are Laguna San Rafael National Park, declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO; and the San Rafael Snowdrift, an ice wall of approximately 100 m height coming from the Northern Patagonian Icefields and from which huge blocks of bluish ice are loosened and fall in the lagoon’s waters.
Austral Road (Carretera Austral)
In the Southern most part of Chile, Patagonia is almost depopulated, but of world interest due to its impressive landscapes that offer lots of possibilities to do tours and excursions.
In the North of Patagonia the Camino Austral is extended. This road is accessed from Puerto Montt, and continues through Palena Province (Los Lagos Region) and it crosses all the North and South Aisen Region to Villa O’Higgins, next to the Southern Patagonian Icefields.
The capital of this last region Coyahaique, is located 1.640 km to the South of Santiago and a 3 hour and 20 minute flight from there. It is a graveled road (except in Coyhaique and its surroundings) of approximately 1.200 km of extension that crosses imposing virgin forests, copious rivers, glaciers, snowdrifts, channels and brooks.
It is the perfect milieu to travel in motored vehicles, mountain bike, cycle tourism, trekking and strolls.
The zone is also paradise for fly fishing or the lonely trout fishing (farios and rainbow trouts) along with fishing of the coho salmon, surrounded by rivers and millenary forests. The place is equipped with necessary and cozy lodgings for fishermen.
The geography of the region allows for rafting in world famous rivers, among which we can mention the Futaleufú and the Baker, with high class rapids, sport boating is another interesting activity to do (General Carrera Lake) and also equestrian activities.
Trekking is possible in this land full of snowdrifts, mountains and volcanoes thanks to the trails which can be traveled on horseback and also walking.
Aquatic activities such as sea and river kayak, rafting and fly fishing of salmon and trouts can be practiced in the rivers, lakes and sea.Sailing is possible among isles and channels, an activity that allows tourist to enjoy the wonders of the austral landscape.
Rural tourism is also another interesting activity and it is carried out in small villages and towns of the zone, that are currently promoting agriculture and livestock development.
From the tourist’s point of view, the Camino Austral has become one of the most important attractions in Chile, making it possible to know and access a territory that has a lot to be discovered and know yet: Northern Patagonia, an ideal land for adventure tourism, fishing, trekking, extreme sports, kayaking, rafting and flora and fauna observation in its wildest condition.
